Abstract
Background: Recently, the rapid aging of the Korean population has caused social problems, and the number of elderly people living alone has increased. Hypertension, the most prevalent chronic disease in Korea, is an important disease in a rapidly aging society. This study aimed to compare and analyze the social and medical characteristics of elderly people with hypertension living alone and those living with one or more people.

Methods: Using data from the 7th National Health and Nutrition Survey, the characteristics related to social and medical institutions, physical health, mental health, and dietary life were compared between household types using the t-test and chi-square test in the elderly aged 64 years and above.

Results: Elderly people with hypertension living alone and those living with one or more people had significant differences in educational level, economic level, use of medical services, mental health, and diet.

Conclusion: Elderly people with hypertension living alone had lower educational levels, lower economic levels, lower medical service utilization rates, worse mental health, and lower daily life function compared to elderly people with hypertension living with one or more people. Therefore, continuous support and attention is needed to narrow the gap between the health level of elderly people with chronic diseases living alone and other elderly people.
